How To Rebuild Habits In Times Of Change
It is perfectly normal to experience some of your habits vanish as your environment changes.
Maybe you have moved to a new place, domestically or internationally. Maybe you have gotten an opportunity and a lucky break? Or something terrible has shown up, uninvited at your door?
In these situations, you must keep your head above water. You must allocate more attention and energy to making the situation the best. Therefore, previously solid habits can slip.
Again, you are on your side. Take your time and do not criticize yourself for not doing the habits at the moment. However, once you feel that everything has been well taken care of, you can rebuild them by doing the following:
Step-by-step instructions
- List out the habits you want to reintroduce
- Make them smaller until you feel that you can comfortably do them in your current situation.
- For each habit, write down exactly when and where to start. For example: “after I close my laptop at 12:00 before lunch, I will do five push-ups in the same room”. It might be a different time now, hence it is important to set it straight.
- Visualize briefly how you are going to do the habit (maximum 15 seconds). Visualize yourself in the now
- Finally, put a reminder in your calendar (or other systems) to make sure you will not miss the start.
Be patient, and they will come back faster than when you introduced them.
