6 Ways To Instantly Calm Down Wherever You Are
Yes, you can have too much energy.
This often shows up as anxiety, jittery or normal excitement, especially when it is something you love to do. Just like a computer or car, being overheated is not good for working. In other words, you want the right level of energy to produce your best work.
Based on modern science and my own experience (since I struggle with having too much energy), here are 6 ways to instantly calm yourself down, no matter the circumstances:
1. Do the Physiological Sigh
This one is by far the most effective. By doing two inhales after one another and then a very long exhale, you will dramatically lower your pulse. Use it whenever you feel too stressed for a given situation (but not when driving or near water!!). Learn more about the physiological sigh in this video.
2. Exhale longer than you inhale
In general, inhaling longer will make you more alert, and exhaling longer will make you calmer. Whether you exhale through the nose or mouth, it is highly beneficial to go very slowly there.
3. Turn off your headphones
If you are very worked up, you might want to turn off what you listen to. Silence or very calm music will make it easier for you to wind down.
4. Write down the stressful thoughts
If something has happened that makes you unhappy, writing what you think will put the situation in perspective. You will break free from the endless chatter that keeps you up at night. Learn more about non-stop capture here.
5. Give Physical Touch
Massaging yourself and others or letting them massage you is a great way to calm down. You become more grounded, present, and loving. Whenever you feel worked up, just massage your arm or hug a loved one.
6. Do not try. Just be ok with right now
Ironically, trying to relax will make you less relaxed. It is when you let go of conscious control and accept the situation for what it is that your body will instantly relax.
Remember that your body is an expert at regulating itself to beneficial levels without your involvement. As long as you get yourself out of the way and trust what happens, relaxing will be much easier.
